How Reading Time Estimator works

Reading time is calculated mathematically by taking your text's total word count and dividing it by established words-per-minute (WPM) reading metrics. Casual readers average 200 WPM, average readers 250 WPM, fast readers 300 WPM, and the typical speaking pace is about 150 WPM. The tool splits text using Regular Expressions (Regex) to accurately count individual words, sentences, and paragraphs locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is word count divided by typical reading speeds: 200 WPM (casual), 250 WPM (average), and 300 WPM (fast).
What is speaking time and how is it calculated?
Speaking time is based on 150 words per minute, a common pace for presentations and speeches.
Does it account for reading difficulty?
No. It uses word count only. Dense or technical text may take longer than the estimate.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
Can I use it for blog posts and scripts?
Yes. Paste any article, script, or email to get reading and speaking time instantly.
Is there a size limit?
There is no hard limit, but very large documents may be slower. For best performance, analyze sections.
